Basic Bible Studies for new Christians

Together - two members greet each other

The church
The Church is described in many ways in the New Testament. The reason for this is because there is no one thing we can compare it to — there is nothing in human society like the church. It is a body, but not an organisation. It consists of all the believers through all time throughout the world, but it exists in local fellowships. Every believer is part of the church, and every believer should belong to a local church to meet regularly with other believers. These local churches exist in all kinds of forms, because God has given freedom to the church in many areas. This is the pattern of church life in the New Testament:

Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 16:2
• Congregations met together in a special way on the first day of the week (Sunday)
Acts 14:23
• There are to be church officers who have responsibility for the local churches
Acts 6:1-6
• There should be deacons responsible for the community of the church in the area of material things
1 Corinthians 5:1-5
• The church is to take discipline seriously
1 Timothy 3:1-7
• There are specific qualifications for elders and deacons
Acts 15
• There is a place for form on a wider basis than the local church
Acts 2:41-42
• Baptism and the Lord’s supper
